La Veta Trails is asking for your help to fulfill a trail vision.
The Town of La Veta and La Veta Trails have formed a partnership to construct Phase 1 of the Cucharas River Trail (CRT) that will connect four open spaces in town, totaling 10+ acres. We have applied to Colorado Parks and Wildlife for a $290,521 trail construction grant to complete the project and La Veta Trails has committed to raising $17,000 towards the cash match requirement of $85,000.
We need your help.
In 2019, Volunteer Stewards, ages 2 to 82, worked thousands of hours on the La Veta Volunteer Flood Mitigation Project. With the tall vegetation removed from its banks, people could see the Cucharas River for the first time as it wound its way through town. It was no surprise when the La Veta Parks, Open Space and Trails Master Plan was completed in 2020, that a Cucharas River Trail was identified as the NUMBER ONE recreational priority by people during the community input process.
The total budget of $290,521 covers the following costs:
adding trailhead parking;
grooming open spaces to make them accessible to users;
adding a crosswalk at Ryus and Oak streets;
constructing a new trail and natural sidewalks for walkers, hikers and cyclists of all ages and abilities;
installing trail directional and interpretative signs to feature local ecosystems;
installing benches and ADA compliant picnic tables; and
constructing a bike-pedestrian bridge over the river at Garland St.
When complete, Phase 1 CRT will add 1.5-miles of multi-use trails to La Veta's community-based system of parks, open space and trails; link to the Southern Mountain Loop Trail; provide direct access to the river; promote outdoor recreation; increase community health; and benefit the local economy.
To date, La Veta Trails has raised $2,760 of our $17,000 goal from trail supporters in La Veta, Cuchara, Walsenburg and around the United States. We are asking the donors participating in the Spanish Peaks Business Alliance’s Holiday Giving Event to help us reach our fundraising goal and be an important participant in fulfilling this vision.
